Fowey sits on the western bank of the river it’s named for, its streets steep and narrow enough that the town has never really adapted to cars — which is part of why it still feels like a working sailing town rather than a resort, even with the yachts moored below the Royal Fowey Yacht Club. All three of our pubs sit within a few minutes of each other around the town quay and Fore Street.

The Ship Inn, on Trafalgar Square, is Fowey’s oldest building of any kind still standing as a pub, with parts dating to 1435 — a Grade II* listed “old lady of Fowey” known locally for doggy treats at the bar. The Galleon Inn, on Fore Street overlooking the river, has seven rooms and a bar with a billiards table, alongside live music on Fridays. Havener’s, on the Town Quay itself, is the most contemporary of the three — five en-suite bedrooms plus a two-bedroom self-catering apartment, with a Grade II listed dining room downstairs.

There’s no railway station in Fowey; the nearest is Par, about 4 miles away on the main Plymouth–Truro line, so most visitors arrive by car, by bus, or on foot from Polruan via the passenger ferry.

Questions people ask about Fowey

Which Fowey pubs with rooms have parking?
None of our three have on-site parking — Fowey's streets are steep, narrow and largely unsuited to cars in the centre. Havener's is explicit about this on its own site; the Ship Inn and Galleon Inn are in the same central position, a short walk from the town's pay-and-display car parks.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Fowey?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, with rooms attached — all three of our pubs are genuine town pubs on or just off the quay, rather than the larger hotels Fowey also has, like Fowey Hall up on the hill above town.
Is Fowey the same place as Polruan?
No — Polruan is a separate village directly across the River Fowey, reachable by a passenger ferry from Fowey's town quay. All three pubs on this page are in Fowey itself.
