Stow-on-the-Wold sits on a hilltop where the Fosse Way crosses several old droving roads, which is the practical reason it became a market town in the first place — sheep from most of the Cotswolds passed through its square on the way to somewhere else. That square is now ringed with pubs rather than livestock pens, and it’s an unusually dense cluster for a town this size: four genuine pubs with rooms within a couple of minutes’ walk of each other.

The Porch House claims to be the oldest inn in England, with timbers dated to the 10th century; the Bell and the Old Stocks Inn are both more recent but still proper coaching inns, the latter keeping a genuine walk-in bar despite branding itself a boutique hotel. Out at Lower Oddington, a couple of miles east, the Fox is the village option — modern British food in a 17th-century building, worth the short drive if the town centre feels too busy.

Stow gets crowded — it’s one of the most-visited Cotswolds towns — so weekend parking and dinner bookings both need more planning than the size of the place would suggest.

Questions people ask about Stow-on-the-Wold

Which pubs with rooms in Stow-on-the-Wold have parking?
None of the four we've listed advertises its own car park — Stow's Market Square and streets around it are lined with pay-and-display, and that's what everyone uses, pub guests included. Budget for a short walk with your bags rather than expecting to pull up outside.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Stow-on-the-Wold?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, not a boutique hotel that keeps a bar for the look of it. The Old Stocks Inn brands itself as a "boutique hotel" and we nearly left it off on that basis — but its own bar page says "no need to book, just turn up," which is a genuine walk-in pub bar whatever the marketing calls the rooms upstairs. We've included it on that basis, flagged plainly.
Is it true the Porch House is the oldest inn in England?
That's the pub's own claim, based on timbers in the building carbon-dated to the 10th century — we haven't independently verified the dating, but it's a widely repeated and long-standing claim about the building, not something invented for a listing site.
