The North York Moors run from market towns on their southern edge to a dramatic coastline in the east — England’s largest continuous expanse of heather moorland, in genuine full purple bloom for a few weeks each August, plus steam railways and villages that haven’t changed much in a century. Our coverage sits at opposite ends of that spread: Helmsley on the moors’ southern rim, and Robin Hood’s Bay on the coast itself, roughly 30 miles apart by road across the park’s width.
Helmsley’s own pubs sit a short drive from Rievaulx Abbey, the ruined 12th-century Cistercian abbey that’s one of the park’s genuine must-sees, and from Helmsley Castle in the town itself. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway — proper working steam trains, not a tourist replica — runs the length of the park between Pickering and Whitby, though neither of those two towns falls inside our North York Moors coverage here specifically (Pickering sits just outside the park’s legal boundary; see its own town page for why).
Robin Hood’s Bay, at the coastal end, sits within a national park landscape that also takes in Ravenscar and the cliffs above Boggle Hole — dramatic, and part of why the village itself is built down such a steep bank to the sea.
These are the pubs with rooms we know of in and around the park.
