Edinburgh has plenty of hotels and very few genuine pubs with rooms, so this is a short list and we’d rather say so than pad it. There is one in the Old Town, the Inn on the Mile on the Royal Mile, where a working bar sits under nine bedrooms. The rest are village pubs on the edge of the city, between about five and eight miles out, where you trade the Old Town for a pub with a garden, a canal or a bridge outside.
Those village pubs are South Queensferry, where the Hawes Inn sits under the Forth bridges and appears in Stevenson’s Kidnapped; Balerno, at the foot of the Pentland Hills; Ratho, on the Union Canal; and Lasswade, just over the city boundary in Midlothian. All are a short drive from the centre, and the Hawes Inn is within walking distance of a railway station.
We’ve left out the city’s hotels with a bar attached, such as Black Ivy in Bruntsfield, because they’re hotels rather than pubs. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August and Hogmanay are busy times, so book well ahead for either.
We’ve checked each pub the same way as everywhere else on this site, using its own website wherever it has one: dog policy for the bedrooms, the bar and the restaurant, and what the kitchen actually does. Dog rules differ sharply here, from dogs in two bedrooms at the Bridge Inn to no pets at all at the Inn on the Mile, so read each page. Where a pub hasn’t said, we show that as unknown rather than guess.
Edinburgh has charged a 5% visitor levy on paid overnight stays since 24 July 2026, on up to the first five nights, so expect it on top of the room rate at pubs inside the city council area.
