Whitby earns its keep as a genuine working harbour town — fishing boats, the 199 steps up to the Abbey, Dracula’s shadow over all of it — which means its pubs skew towards proper harbourside boozers rather than manufactured “gastro” conversions. That’s a point in their favour if you want a pint and a decent room above it, but it does mean dog policy and food standard vary more than you’d expect from one street to the next.
Central Whitby (Pier Road, Church Street, St Ann’s Staith) puts you in the thick of it — harbour views, the abbey walk on foot, and tight, paid parking. Out at Stainsacre and up on Upgang Lane towards Sandsend, you trade a five-minute walk into town for easier parking and, in the Windmill Inn’s case, a pub that sits directly on the Cinder Track, the old railway line now used for walking into town.
None of Whitby’s pubs with rooms carry a food award we could find — this is a beer-and-a-decent-dinner town rather than a destination-dining one, and the listings below reflect that honestly rather than inflating anyone’s kitchen.

- Central Whitby parking is genuinely tight and mostly paid, so check this before you book. The Buck Inn is the one central pub we found with its own free on-site parking. The two out-of-centre options — the Windmill Inn at Stainsacre and the White House Inn on Upgang Lane — are far more likely to have easy parking simply by virtue of not being in the old town, though we haven't had this confirmed for every one of them yet.
