Pubs with Rooms in Windermere

England's largest lake, with a hillside town at one end and the lakeside village of Bowness at the other.

Windermere is England’s largest lake, and the town at its northern end shares the name — though most of the pubs, and most of the lakeshore itself, are actually a mile down the hill in Bowness-on-Windermere. The two have grown together into one continuous stretch of shops, guesthouses and pubs, and most visitors don’t distinguish between them.

All three pubs on this page are in Bowness rather than Windermere proper: the Royal Oak and the Albert are traditional pubs a short walk from the water, while the Angel Inn looks straight out across the lake towards the Langdale Pikes.

Windermere has its own railway station, the terminus of a branch line from Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line — a genuinely useful way to arrive without a car, though Bowness itself is still a mile’s walk or a short bus ride from the station.

Just outside Windermere

Not in Windermere itself, but close enough to stay — the town's shops, pubs and sights are only a short trip in from any of these.

Questions people ask about Windermere

Which pubs with rooms in Windermere have parking?
The Angel Inn, in Bowness, has free parking for overnight guests (limited spaces, first come first served). We haven't confirmed parking for the Royal Oak or the Albert yet.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Windermere?
We only list places that are genuinely pubs first — a bar you could walk into for a pint, not just a hotel that happens to serve food. That's why Windermere's listing leans on the pubs in Bowness rather than every hotel around the lake.
Is Windermere the same place as Bowness-on-Windermere?
Not quite, though people use the names interchangeably. Windermere is the hillside town around the railway station; Bowness-on-Windermere is the older lakeside village about a mile down the hill, where most of the pubs on this page actually are. They've grown into each other and most visitors treat them as one place.
