The Swan & Royal
Gastropub
A Ribble Valley market town under a Norman keep, with Pendle Hill on the skyline and good walking country on every side.
Clitheroe is the Ribble Valley’s main market town, built around a steep little Norman keep that’s been looking out over the valley since the 12th century. Pendle Hill dominates the skyline to the east, and the Forest of Bowland’s fells and villages start almost as soon as you leave town.
The Swan & Royal sits right in the town centre on Castle Street, recently reopened as a destination gastropub after a full refurbishment. Out in the surrounding villages, the Calf’s Head at Worston and the Assheton Arms at Downham are both proper countryside pubs with rooms — a couple of miles out, but easy reach of the town and Pendle Hill both.
Clitheroe has its own railway station, the terminus of the line from Manchester and Blackburn — a reasonable option if you’re arriving without a car, though the village pubs are easier reached with one.
Not in Clitheroe itself, but close enough to stay — the town's shops, pubs and sights are only a short trip in from any of these.
