Cromer is a Victorian seaside town on the North Norfolk coast, built around its pier and its tall parish church tower. The Red Lion sits on Brook Street looking over the pier, with fourteen rooms, a restaurant with an AA-rated kitchen and a bar pouring a dozen local real ales — and it is one of the most explicitly dog-friendly pubs on this coast, with a ‘doggy bar’ of its own and dogs welcome in the restaurant as well as the bar.
The other three pubs are a short drive out along the coast. The White Horse in Overstrand is a village pub with ten en-suite rooms about two miles away. The Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market is a very different proposition: an art-filled pub on a deer-park estate with sixteen rooms and a kitchen that cooks over fire, with dogs allowed in the bar and some bedrooms. And at Mundesley, the Ship Inn is a beachfront pub with seven rooms, where dogs are welcome in every bedroom, the bar and the restaurant.
Cromer has a railway station on the Bittern Line from Norwich, so the Red Lion is a realistic car-free break; the other three are easiest by car. Some of the beaches along this stretch have seasonal dog restrictions between May and September, which the Red Lion’s own page spells out — worth checking before you plan the walks.
Not in Cromer itself, but close enough to stay — the town's shops, pubs and sights are only a short trip in from any of these.
