Hathersage sits on the River Derwent under Stanage Edge, one of the Peak District’s best-known gritstone climbing edges, in a village with more literary and mountaineering history than its size suggests — Charlotte Brontë stayed here and is said to have used it as the model for Morton in Jane Eyre.
The Scotsman’s Pack and the George both sit in the village centre, while the Plough Inn is a short walk out along the Derwent, a proper 16th-century pub with shepherd’s huts alongside its rooms.
