Staying in a York pub means a bedroom above a proper bar, usually in a historic building, with the Minster, the Shambles and the medieval city walls within a few minutes’ walk. It is a different night from a hotel stay: you can drink downstairs, wander out to dinner and be back in your room in a minute.

We list ten pubs with rooms here. Eight are in the city itself. The Guy Fawkes Inn, the Fat Badger, the Bootham Tavern, the Exhibition and the White Horse cluster around High Petergate and Bootham, by Bootham Bar; the Golden Fleece is on Pavement, close to the Shambles; the Black Swan on Peasholme Green is a timber-framed pub with four-poster rooms; and the Watergate Inn is a former coaching inn on Walmgate. Two more are worth the trip out: the Plough at Fulford, a family-run pub about two miles south of the centre, and the Durham Ox at Crayke, a village inn about 12 miles north with a restaurant-led kitchen.

Be honest with yourself about noise and cars. These are working pubs, several open until 1am at weekends, and most of the ones inside the walls have no parking, so the practical choices are a rear room and a car park or the train. Dogs are the other thing to check before you book: the Guy Fawkes Inn and the Golden Fleece welcome dogs in the bar but not in the bedrooms, while the Durham Ox takes them in selected rooms. For several of the others we haven’t found a dog policy yet, and we say so on the page rather than guessing.

Questions people ask about York

Which pubs with rooms in York have parking?
It depends where you stay. The pubs inside the walls mostly have none: the Guy Fawkes Inn and the Fat Badger both say they have no on-site parking and point guests to the Marygate car park, about a 5 to 10 minute walk, and the Golden Fleece says the nearest is the Q-Park Shambles, 3 to 4 minutes away. Further out it gets easier: the Black Swan on Peasholme Green has a free car park included in the room price, the Exhibition on Bootham says it has free off-road parking for guests, and the Plough in Fulford lists free on-site parking. We couldn't confirm parking at the Bootham Tavern, the White Horse or the Watergate Inn, so ask when you book. If you're arriving by train, you won't need a car for the city-centre pubs.
How central are York's pubs with rooms, and can I walk from the station?
All eight in-town pubs are within about 0.5 to 0.7 miles of York station in a straight line (our estimate, not a measured route), so roughly a 12 to 20 minute walk with a bag. The Guy Fawkes Inn and the Fat Badger sit side by side in High Petergate, a minute or so from the Minster, and the Bootham Tavern, the Exhibition and the White Horse are a short walk along Bootham beside them. The Golden Fleece is on Pavement, close to the Shambles. The Plough is in Fulford, about two miles south of the centre, and the Durham Ox is in Crayke, roughly 12 miles north of the city, so those two suit a car or a taxi.
Are York's pubs with rooms noisy?
Some of them, yes, and it's worth choosing with that in mind. These are working pubs in a busy tourist city. The Bootham Tavern and the White Horse are open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Golden Fleece lists live music and is open until midnight. Guest reviews on Booking.com mention noise from the bar and the Minster bells at the Guy Fawkes Inn. The Exhibition's own site is candid that three of its rooms overlook busy roads and that Fishergate and Victoria are the quiet ones, so ask for a rear room wherever you book. If peace matters most, the Durham Ox at Crayke or the Plough at Fulford are the quieter options.
