Pubs with Rooms in Scarborough

Britain's original seaside resort, two working bays either side of a castle headland.

Scarborough got into the seaside business earlier than anywhere else in Britain — a spa town since the 1600s, a resort proper since the Victorians arrived by rail — and it still runs on two bays either side of a castle-topped headland rather than one long front. South Bay is the traditional end: harbour, arcades, the old town’s tight lanes behind it. North Bay is quieter, with the Open Air Theatre and Peasholm Park.

The pubs with rooms in town itself sit on opposite sides of that divide: the North Riding Brew Pub is tucked into the Old Town behind the harbour, brewing its own beer in the cellar; the Valley Bar is inland of South Bay, a long-running family pub with a handful of budget rooms above the bar. Out along the coast road towards Whitby, Scalby and Burniston each have a genuine village pub with rooms — the Plough and the Oak Wheel respectively — both a few miles out but easy driving distance if you want a quieter base than the town centre.

Scarborough sits outside the North York Moors National Park boundary, on the coast rather than in the Moors themselves — reason enough, along with the sheer size of the town, to treat it as its own listing rather than folding it into a themed collection.

Questions people ask about Scarborough

Which pubs with rooms in Scarborough have parking?
The Oak Wheel, out at Burniston, has its own free on-site car park — the easiest of the four. The Plough, in Scalby, is in a residential village street where parking can be genuinely difficult at busy times; expect to park a short walk away. The Valley Bar, in town, relies on street parking with a paid permit from the bar. We couldn't confirm parking at the North Riding Brew Pub in the Old Town — worth asking when you book, given its harbourside streets are tight.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Scarborough?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, with rooms upstairs or attached — which is why our in-town list is the North Riding Brew Pub and the Valley Bar rather than any of Scarborough's larger seafront hotels, and why we've included the Plough and the Oak Wheel as village options a few miles up the coast road rather than every pub in the wider district.
Are Scarborough's pubs with rooms dog-friendly at dinner, not just in the bar?
It varies more than you'd expect between two pubs a few miles apart. The Plough, in Scalby, welcomes dogs in the bar but not after 5pm on Friday and Saturday evenings — its busiest dining service. The Oak Wheel, in Burniston, is more specific still: dogs are welcome when food isn't being served, which in practice means outside meal times. Neither is a blanket "dog friendly" in the way a quick search might suggest — check the timing against your own plans.
