St Ives sits on its own small headland at the western end of St Ives Bay, with a working fishing harbour on one side and Porthminster Beach curving away on the other — a genuinely rare combination of a proper Cornish harbour town that’s also a beach resort. The three pubs on this page trace that geography: two on the harbour itself, one perched above the beach.

The Sloop Inn has stood on the harbour wharf since around 1312, making it one of the oldest pubs in Cornwall, with 20 rooms across the main building and adjoining cottages — some, including the Bosun’s and Lower Deck rooms, specifically dog-friendly. The Lifeboat Inn sits beside the town’s actual lifeboat house on Wharf Road, a traditional harbourside local with sea views and a log fire. Pedn Olva, refreshed in 2025, sits on the rocks above Porthminster Beach rather than the harbour, with views across the bay from most rooms.

St Ives has its own railway station, right in the town centre, on the branch line from St Erth — one of the few towns on this site where arriving by train genuinely makes sense, and one of England’s more scenic short branch lines in its own right.

Questions people ask about St Ives

Which St Ives pubs with rooms have parking?
We haven't confirmed on-site parking for any of our three — St Ives's harbourside streets are narrow and largely traffic-free in season. The town's Trenwith car park, on the hill above the centre, is the usual option, with a walk down to any of the three.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in St Ives?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, with rooms attached — the Sloop Inn and the Lifeboat Inn are both genuine harbourside pubs. Pedn Olva sits slightly apart on the rocks above Porthminster Beach and reads more like a small hotel, but it's still run around a working bar rather than as a pure hotel.
Does St Ives have a railway station?
Yes — unlike most of the other towns on this site, St Ives has its own station, right in the centre, on the St Ives Bay Line branch from St Erth. It's one of the more scenic short branch lines in England, running along the bay for most of its length.
