Edinburgh’s pub-with-rooms scene is thin in the middle and better on the edges. In the Old Town, the Inn on the Mile is the one we’ve found: a Royal Mile corner pub and kitchen under nine bedrooms, in a building whose rooms were built in 1923 for the British Linen Bank. It is a short walk from Waverley station, so you can arrive by train with a bag and leave the car at home.

The other four are village pubs, five to eight miles out. The Hawes Inn at South Queensferry, a Category B listed coaching inn with 14 rooms, sits under the Forth bridges and is the inn in Stevenson’s Kidnapped. The Balerno Inn, the former Malleny Arms at the foot of the Pentland Hills, was restored by its current owners and has five rooms. The Bridge Inn at Ratho has four rooms named for canal figures and local history, overlooking the Union Canal, and the Laird & Dog in Lasswade has 11.

Distances are straight-line map estimates from central Edinburgh, so allow longer by road. Edinburgh charges a 5% visitor levy on overnight stays from 24 July 2026, which the pubs inside the council area collect on top of the room rate.

Questions people ask about Edinburgh

Are there any pubs with rooms in Edinburgh city centre?
One that we've found. The Inn on the Mile is on the Royal Mile in the Old Town, in a building whose rooms date from 1923, when the British Linen Bank was at its peak, with nine bedrooms above a pub and kitchen. Other places with a bar and rooms in the city, such as Black Ivy in Bruntsfield, are hotels, so we haven't listed them.
Which pubs with rooms near Edinburgh are easy to reach without a car?
The Hawes Inn at South Queensferry is about a mile from Dalmeny station. The Balerno Inn says the Lothian 44 bus stops on its Main Street and that Currie station is about 1.8 miles away. The Laird & Dog in Lasswade says its bus into the centre takes about 20 minutes. The Bridge Inn at Ratho runs a courtesy bus on Friday and Saturday evenings within five miles of Ratho, booked in advance, but we haven't checked public buses to it.
Will a room above the Inn on the Mile be noisy?
Possibly. The nine rooms sit above a busy ground-floor bar on the Royal Mile, the pub's own site says it has live music and sport every night, and guests on lower floors have complained of street noise in reviews. There is no lift, with rooms over three levels. We haven't stayed there, so ask for a higher room away from the bar.
Which of these pubs allow dogs?
It varies a lot. The Bridge Inn at Ratho takes dogs in the bar, garden and two bedrooms (£25 per dog per stay), and the Hawes Inn takes dogs in the rooms for £15 a night. The Balerno Inn welcomes dogs in its bar and garden, but its bedrooms and restaurant dining room are pet-free, and the Inn on the Mile says its hotel doesn't accept pets. We couldn't confirm a policy for the Laird & Dog.
Is there a tourist tax in Edinburgh?
Yes. A 5% visitor levy applies to paid overnight stays in the City of Edinburgh Council area from 24 July 2026, on the room cost for up to the first five consecutive nights. It applies at the Inn on the Mile, the Hawes Inn, the Balerno Inn and the Bridge Inn, which are all inside the council area, but not at the Laird & Dog, which is just across the boundary in Midlothian.
