Brancaster sits on the Norfolk Coast Path, with salt marsh on one side and a long sandy beach on the other, and the pubs on this page are strung along the A149 coast road that connects it to its neighbouring villages. It’s a quieter, more marsh-and-boats stretch of the coast than the seaside towns either side, and the draw is walking, birdwatching and an early-evening pint with the tide out.

The Ship is the in-village pub, a historic pub with nine beamed rooms upstairs and a Mediterranean-leaning kitchen that the Michelin Guide describes without awarding a star. About two miles east, the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe backs onto the marshes, with fifteen rooms, two AA rosettes for its seafood cooking and a boardwalk walk to Brancaster beach from the pub. Three miles west in Thornham are two more pubs — the Lifeboat Inn, a fire-warmed smugglers’ inn with sixteen rooms, and the Orange Tree, with eighteen rooms across a courtyard, a lodge and an old bakery.

There’s no railway station in Brancaster; the nearest is King’s Lynn, about 20 miles away. The Coasthopper bus runs along the coast road and, according to the White Horse’s own page, stops right outside its door.

Questions people ask about Brancaster

Which pubs with rooms in Brancaster have parking?
Three of our four say something. The Ship lists free parking, the Lifeboat Inn in Thornham says it has ample parking, and the Orange Tree has a private car park for its Manor Lodge rooms. We haven't confirmed parking at the White Horse.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Brancaster?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, with rooms attached. The Ship in Brancaster, the White Horse in Brancaster Staithe and the Lifeboat Inn and Orange Tree in Thornham all have proper bars. We haven't included Brancaster Staithe's Jolly Sailors because we couldn't find any rooms there.
Is the Norfolk coast dog-friendly for a pub stay?
Often, but the detail varies. The Lifeboat Inn lets dogs stay for an extra £25 in any room package, the Orange Tree charges £12 a night in most rooms but not its Old Bakery rooms, and both the White Horse and the Ship offer dog-friendly rooms only in part — the White Horse in its garden rooms, the Ship in "many" unnamed ones. Ask before you book.
