Staying in a London pub is a different thing from staying in a hotel. You get a working bar downstairs, a building with a long history, often rebuilt along the way, and bedrooms upstairs: sometimes only a handful, sometimes a few dozen. We’ve covered 15 areas and 49 pubs, from a Victorian bank hall in the City to a landmark on Clapham Common.

London works differently from the rest of this site, so the pages do too. Here the area matters more than the town: Soho, Smithfield, Shoreditch and Greenwich are all very different places to wake up. Each pub lists its nearest Tube or rail station and the walk from it, because most guests won’t be driving. We still record the dog policy and the food, but they’re not what decides a London stay. The building, the neighbourhood and the noise are.

A word on that last one. Rooms above a busy bar can be lively, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays, and in old buildings the walls and floors are what they are. If sleep matters, ask which room is furthest from the bar when you book, and book early, because the best rooms go first.

London pubs also come with stories, and we tell them. Where a tale is in the historical record we say so, where it’s a local legend we call it that, and where historians disagree we show both sides, so you know how much of it to believe over a pint.
