A market town on the River Wye, famous for its pudding and its position at the heart of the Peak District.
Bakewell is the Peak District’s main market town, built around the River Wye and famous — properly famous, not just locally — for the Bakewell pudding (not tart, whatever the shops call it elsewhere). It’s the busiest base in this corner of Derbyshire, within easy reach of Chatsworth House and the limestone dales to the south.
The Castle and the Peacock both sit right in the town centre, a short walk from the market square and the river. Out at Ashford in the Water, a couple of miles west, the Ashford Arms trades the town-centre bustle for one of the Peak District’s prettiest villages — a short stroll from the famous Sheepwash Bridge.
Bakewell has no railway station of its own — the nearest is Matlock, about 9 miles away. Most visitors arrive by car.
