Pubs with Rooms in Hawes

The highest market town in the Yorkshire Dales, at the head of Wensleydale.

Hawes sits at the head of Wensleydale, the highest market town in the Yorkshire Dales, and it still feels like a proper working one — Tuesday’s auction mart day, the creamery down the road still makes Wensleydale cheese, and the Pennine Way runs straight through the middle of it.

All three of its pubs with rooms sit on or around Market Place: the White Hart, a 16th-century coaching inn with 5 rooms; the Crown, a smaller inn with just 3 recently refitted rooms and free dog stays; and the Fountain Hotel, the largest of the three at 11 rooms. All three are genuinely dog-friendly in some form, though the detail — bedroom, bar or restaurant — varies pub by pub.

Worth knowing if you’re basing a Dales trip here: the branch railway through Hawes closed in 1959, so this is very much a driving destination, with Garsdale’s request stop on the Settle-Carlisle line the nearest rail option, about 5 miles over the tops.

Questions people ask about Hawes

Which pubs with rooms in Hawes have parking?
All three of our Hawes listings — the White Hart, the Crown and the Fountain Hotel — sit on or just off Market Place, where parking is public and shared rather than any pub's own. There's a public car park in the town itself; none of the three advertises dedicated on-site parking.
What counts as a "pub with rooms" in Hawes?
A bar you could walk into for a pint, with rooms attached. That's why our list is the White Hart, the Crown and the Fountain Hotel — we've left out the Moorcock Inn, a few miles out at Garsdale Head, which closed in 2023 and is going through planning permission to become a tearoom rather than reopening as a pub.
Are Hawes's pubs with rooms dog-friendly at dinner, not just in the bar?
The White Hart is the clearest yes — it specifically names a designated dog-friendly area within the restaurant itself, not just the bar. The Fountain Hotel is more specific in the other direction: dogs aren't allowed in the breakfast room, though staff will dog-sit while you eat if you ask on arrival. We haven't found the Crown's restaurant policy confirmed either way, despite its bedrooms being genuinely dog-friendly at no charge.
