A working market town at the southern end of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with a Norman castle above the rooftops.
Pickering is a proper working market town rather than a preserved-in-aspic one — Monday’s still market day, the castle above the rooftops is a genuine Norman motte and bailey you can climb rather than a photo backdrop, and the steam trains that leave from the station here are heading somewhere real, up the line to Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont, rather than running for their own sake.
Two of the pubs with rooms sit right in the middle of it: the White Swan, a 16th-century coaching inn on the Market Place with an AA-Rosette kitchen, and the Black Swan, a few minutes away on Birdgate with over 300 years of its own history as an inn and coaching stop. Out at Appleton-le-Moors, a few miles north, the Moors Inn is the village option — a genuine 17th-century inn with its own eight rooms, worth the short drive if you want fewer passing tourists.
Pickering itself sits just south of the North York Moors National Park boundary rather than inside it, despite being universally described as the Moors’ southern gateway — a distinction we think is worth being upfront about rather than blurring for the sake of a tidier pitch.

- The Black Swan has its own free on-site parking, the easiest option of the three if you're driving. The White Swan, on the Market Place, doesn't advertise its own car park, so expect to use one of the town's public car parks nearby. The Moors Inn, out at Appleton-le-Moors, has parking on-site simply by virtue of being a village pub rather than a Market Place one.
