A bustling canal-side market town known as the "Gateway to the Dales", with a working Norman castle at the top of the High Street.
Skipton sits where the Yorkshire Dales meet the Aire valley, a working market town built around a broad, sloping High Street and a Norman castle that’s stood at the top of it for nearly a thousand years. The Leeds & Liverpool Canal runs along one side of town, and the Dales themselves start almost as soon as you leave it.
Two pubs sit right in the town centre — the Woolly Sheep Inn and the Railway, both proper working pubs with rooms upstairs rather than hotels that happen to serve food. Out at Elslack, a few miles west, the Tempest Arms trades the town-centre bustle for open countryside without losing easy reach of Skipton itself.
Skipton has its own railway station, on the line to Leeds and the start of the scenic Settle–Carlisle line north into the Dales — one of the more useful bases on this list if you’re arriving without a car.
