Robin Hood’s Bay is the kind of village that photographs itself — red pantiled roofs stacked down a ravine to a slipway, the North Sea filling the gap at the bottom. It’s also the eastern end of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk, so on any given evening the bars are as likely to be full of walkers finishing a 192-mile trek as they are locals and weekenders.
The catch, and it’s a real one, is the hill. The old village sits below a bank steep enough that the sensible move is to park at the top and walk down — this isn’t a place to expect to pull up outside your pub with the car. It also means “in Robin Hood’s Bay” covers a fair spread: the Bay Hotel and the Laurel Inn are down at the Dock by the sea, while the Grosvenor sits up by the top car park, a genuinely different few minutes’ walk depending on which one you’ve booked.
There’s no railway station in the village itself — the branch line closed in 1965 — so most people arrive by car via the coast road, or by the X93 bus from Whitby or Scarborough. None of that dims the appeal: this is a proper smugglers’-history fishing village, small enough to get the measure of in an afternoon, with real pubs rather than manufactured ones.
