Pubs with Rooms Near Whitby Abbey
Pubs with rooms in Whitby's old town and a few miles along the coast, with how far each is from the abbey and what we know about dogs.
Last reviewed October 2026.
Whitby Abbey is on the East Cliff above the harbour, and the pubs below it in the old town are as close as you can stay: a few minutes’ walk, up the 199 steps. This guide lists pubs with rooms by how far they are from the abbey, then a handful further along the coast at Robin Hood’s Bay.
Distances are straight-line map estimates from the abbey, not walking times, and we haven’t walked them. Parking is limited in the old town, so check the details on each pub’s page, including the dog policy, which varies a lot between neighbours here.

Questions people ask
How far are these pubs from Whitby Abbey?
The abbey stands on the East Cliff above the old town. The Black Horse, Buck Inn and Pier Inn are about a fifth to a third of a mile from it in a straight line, and the walk up is by the 199 steps, which is steep with a bag. The White House Inn and the Windmill Inn are 1 to 2 miles away, and the four Robin Hood's Bay pubs about 5 miles. All distances are map estimates in a straight line, so allow longer by road.
Which of these pubs allow dogs in the bedrooms?
The Bay Hotel and Hotel Victoria in Robin Hood's Bay take dogs in designated rooms, the White House Inn in four annex rooms only (£10 a night), and the Grosvenor reports say dogs are welcome in a room. The Black Horse in Whitby doesn't allow dogs in its four letting rooms, though they're welcome in the bar. For the Buck Inn and the Pier Inn the policy isn't confirmed, so call before you book.
Is Whitby Abbey linked to Dracula?
Yes. Bram Stoker stayed in Whitby in 1890 and set part of Dracula there. Our TV and film guide covers the pubs in places that have been filmed.
