A bit of history
No. 25 High Petergate was added to its terrace in 1707, as a private house, and the front part of the pub is listed Grade II* under its old name, Youngs Hotel. It stands opposite St Michael le Belfrey, the church where Guy Fawkes was baptised in April 1570.

Stories & legends
- Disputed: The inn says Guy Fawkes was born on this spot in 1570 and that the Fawkes family once owned the building. The current house dates from 1707, so it cannot be the house he was born in. Wikipedia says 'there is no evidence' for the claim, and the York Civic Trust argues he was born on nearby Stonegate. That he was baptised at St Michael le Belfrey across the road is not in dispute.
