A bit of history
Mentioned in the York city archives as early as 1503, when the Merchant Adventurers' Hall is recorded as owning it, and licensed as an inn in 1668. The present narrow brick building is a rebuild of about 1840, Grade II listed since 1983.

Stories & legends
- On record: Elizabeth Johnson was hanged at York's Tyburn on 23 August 1800 for forging a £1 note, the last woman executed there. A replica of her skull has been displayed in the pub; it was stolen on New Year's Day 2022 and returned later that month. - Local legend: The pub calls itself one of the most haunted in the country and says it has several resident ghosts, including Lady Alice Peckett, wife of a Lord Mayor of York around 1702, after whom the back yard is named. The Peckett name is real; the hauntings are the pub's own claim, repeated in travel writing and a TV ghost-hunting programme, and cannot be checked.
