Pubs with Rooms / Reports

How dog-friendly are pubs with rooms, really?

The 2026 report

"Dog friendly" is the most used and least specific claim in pub marketing. We checked 149 pubs with rooms across 9 regions, bedroom, bar and restaurant separately, to find out what it actually means.

Published 11 October 2026. Data checked between 1 September and 10 October 2026. 149 pubs, 45 places. See the live, always-current figures →

Key findings

Every figure is "of the pubs we've checked". Where we couldn't find an answer we show it as not confirmed, and the percentages below say whether they're out of all pubs or only those where we found an answer.

  1. 32%

    1. Where we found an answer, nearly a third say no dogs at dinner

Of the 73 pubs where we found a clear answer, 25 (34%) allow dogs in the restaurant, 25 (34%) only in certain areas, and 23 (32%) not at all. For 76 pubs (51%) we couldn't find an answer either way.

  2. 18

    2. Pubs where the dog can sleep in the room but not eat with you

18 pubs allow dogs in at least some bedrooms yet are confirmed not to allow them in the restaurant at dinner. The advertised "dog friendly" badge hides this entirely, and it's the difference between a relaxed evening and one of you eating alone.

  3. 86%

    3. Most pubs take dogs in some rooms, far fewer in all

Of the 112 pubs where we found an answer, 86% allow dogs in at least some bedrooms, but only 39 (35%) say every room. 57 pubs restrict dogs to selected rooms, so it's worth asking for one when you book.

  4. £15

    4. The median charge for a dog to stay

48 of the 53 pubs with a stated dog charge make one (91%); only 5 are confirmed to stay free. Charges range from £5 to £35, and 25 charge per night against 19 per stay.

  5. 34 of 62

    5. Pubs that welcome dogs in the bedroom, bar and at dinner

Among the 62 pubs where we found all three answers, 34 (55%) welcome dogs in all three places. Bedroom, bar and dinner are separate questions, and a pub can answer yes to one and no to another.

  6. Monday

    6. The most common day for the kitchen to be shut

Of the 98 pubs where we found the kitchen days, 16 close the kitchen on at least one day. Monday is the most common (12 pubs), then Tuesday (10). None of them close on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

Dogs and the bar: of the 110 pubs where we found an answer about the bar, all 110 allow dogs there, and none say no. That is partly a reporting effect, since a pub that welcomes dogs in the bar tends to say so while one that doesn't often says nothing, so don't read it as every bar being open to dogs. For 39 more we couldn't find an answer.

By region

Share of pubs allowing dogs, out of the pubs in that region where we found an answer. Regions with few answers are a small sample and shouldn't be compared like for like.

The practical details

How we did this, and its limits

We recorded dog policy for each pub in three places separately: the bedrooms, the bar, and the restaurant at dinner, along with any charge, kitchen days, parking and EV charging. Records start from the pub's own website and published policies, then reviews and listings, and are corrected when a pub confirms or contradicts them. Each record carries one of three states: confirmed with the pub, from published sources, or not yet confirmed. Read more on our about page.

Where the answers come from. All of them are from published sources, usually the pub's own website, not from the pubs telling us directly. No pub has yet had its dog policy confirmed directly with the owner. "Confirmed" in this report means we found a clear published statement, so a pub's practice may differ from what it publishes. We're inviting owners to confirm or correct their details, and future editions will show how many have.

What this is not. It is not a survey of all UK pubs. These are the 149 pubs with rooms we chose to research, across nine regions, concentrated where people search for them, and they are not a random sample. Pubs that publish an answer tend to differ from those that don't, so figures "where we found an answer" describe the pubs we have answers for, and can overstate how welcoming the whole sector is. Pubs change policy, so check directly before you book. The live figures on our live report page move as we research more pubs, and this edition stays fixed.

Definitions. "Dogs in bedrooms" counts pubs that allow dogs in all rooms or selected rooms. "Dogs at dinner" counts pubs that allow dogs throughout the restaurant or in certain areas. "Not confirmed" means we couldn't find the answer, not that the answer is no.
