A bit of history
The oldest part of the building is later 17th century, with a reused datestone reading 'IS BB 1638' at the rear. The Baronial east wing was added in 1893 by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson, and the inn is a Category B listed building.

Stories & legends
- On record: In Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped (1886), the Hawes Inn is where the kidnapping of the hero, David Balfour, is arranged. The listing's statement of interest records this, and the building carries four painted panels of the story's characters. - Local legend: Stevenson is said to have stayed at the inn, and to have thought up or written part of Kidnapped here. Guides name Room 13 as his room. The operator's own page and the Scotsman hedge it as 'said', and we found no record confirming the stay or the room.
