A bit of history
A pub is recorded on Devonshire Row by 1805, when licensing directories list Walter Clark as landlord.

Stories & legends
- On record: This corner of Bishopsgate was once the grounds of Fisher's Folly, a Tudor mansion built by Jasper Fisher and so lavish, John Stow wrote in 1598, that it ruined him. It later passed to the Earls of Oxford and then the Earls of Devonshire, who left their name on the streets around; about 45 metres of its wall still survives behind buildings on Devonshire Row and Bishopsgate. Source: John Stow, Survey of London (1598), as summarised on Wikipedia 'Fisher's Folly'
- Local legend: The pub names one of its rooms after Fisher's Folly, describing it as a house built on the site in 1550. The histories we found give only 'the 16th century' for the mansion and don't place it on the pub's own plot, so treat the 1550 date and the site claim as the pub's. - Disputed: Londonist dates the pub to the 17th century, while the Pub History Society's transcriptions find no landlord before Walter Clark in 1805. Until someone turns up an earlier licence, 1805 is the earliest we can document. Source: Londonist; Pub History Society (pubwiki.co.uk/LondonPubs/Aldgate/Bull.shtml)
