A bit of history
The pub fills the domed banking hall of the former Prescott's Bank, a Grade II listed building of 1891-92 by Henry Cowell Boyes. The bedrooms are in the former City University Club, a gentlemen's club established in the building in 1895.

Stories & legends
- On record: The bank behind the building traced itself to 1766 and Threadneedle Street, became Prescott, Dimsdale, Cave, Tugwell & Co in 1891, and was folded into National Provincial in 1918 and later NatWest. The branch closed in 1997, and the banking hall became a pub. Source: Claxity, 'Prescott's Bank' (citing the Grade II listing); Lost Clubs (Clubland substack)
- On record: Upstairs, the City University Club, founded for Oxford and Cambridge graduates working in the City, kept its lunching rooms here for 122 years from 1895 until it left at the end of 2017. The bedrooms now occupy those floors. Source: Lost Clubs: the former clubhouse of the City University Club (Clubland substack)
- Disputed: One guide says the building's foundations partly rest on a wall of Roman London's basilica, the big public hall of the Roman forum that lay under this part of Cornhill. The basilica certainly lay close by, but we found a scholarly paper placing surviving fabric at neighbouring No. 52, and nothing confirming it at No. 50, so we can't say the claim stands.
