A bit of history
Records trace a pub on this site to 1759 or earlier, as the George & Thirteen Cantons. It later became the Scots Hoose, whose upstairs room hosted a celebrated folk club in the 1950s and 60s, and had taken the Spice of Life name by 1975.

Stories & legends
- On record: The corner of Moor Street and Romilly Street has held a pub since at least 1759, first as the George & Thirteen Cantons. An 1892 sale advertisement still used that name; the "Cantons" are usually linked to Soho's Swiss community, though A London Inheritance says it couldn't find a firm source for that. Source: Survey of London, vol. 33 (1966), via Wikipedia; A London Inheritance, 'Soho Pubs - Part 3'
- On record: As the Scots Hoose, the upstairs room hosted one of the best-known folk clubs of the British folk revival in the 1950s and 60s, run by Bruce Dunnet. Wikipedia and A London Inheritance name Bert Jansch, Al Stewart, Davey Graham, Ralph McTell, Roy Harper, Sandy Denny, Ewan MacColl and The Young Tradition among those who played or drank there. The sources don't say where the Scots Hoose name came from, or give exact dates for the club. - Local legend: Later rock and punk names are said to have drunk here, from the Sex Pistols and the Stranglers to members of Monty Python. The Wikipedia article lists them without citations, so treat it as pub folklore rather than record. Source: Wikipedia 'The Spice of Life, London' (uncited section)
