A bit of history
The present corner pub, designed by J W Brooker, dates from 1877 and is Grade II listed. The pub's own guest information says a Yorkshire Grey has stood in Holborn since 1676.

Stories & legends
- On record: Above the corner door, the listed building carries a carved panel of a mounted soldier in Yorkshire Grey uniform, sword drawn, with a castle behind. Historic England records it as carved by a "Mr Plows" in 1878, a year after J W Brooker's pub went up. Source: Historic England listing, Grade II (list entry 1379006)
- Local legend: The pub says a Yorkshire Grey has stood in Holborn since 1676, and Wikipedia repeats the date. We couldn't trace the primary record behind it, and the present building is Victorian, so read it as the pub's claim rather than a documented fact.
