Stories & legends
- On record: The pub is named for Thomas Masterman Hardy, captain of HMS Victory at Trafalgar and the man at Nelson's side as he died. He became Governor of Greenwich Hospital in 1834 and died in Greenwich in 1839, a short walk from the pub. Source: Wikipedia, 'Thomas Hardy (Royal Navy officer)'; the naming is given in Greenwich local-history listings
- On record: Old records are not tidy about the name. Directories of 1840 and 1858 read 'Admiral Harvey', an 1848 licence transfer spells it 'Admirable Hardy', and the pub then stood in Clarence Street, not College Approach. A music hall called the Admiral Hardy is recorded in Clarence Street in 1874. Source: Pub History Society (pubwiki.co.uk), Admiral Hardy, Greenwich, from Pigot's Directory and local newspaper notices
