A bit of history
A Victorian corner pub opposite Wandsworth Town station, named after the Crimean War battle of the Alma (1854) and probably built soon after. Its decorative scheme and green tiled exterior date from around 1900. Pub-history sources vary on the opening year (one says 1866); it is recorded as open by 1878.

Stories & legends
- On record: The Alma takes its name from the Battle of the Alma on 20 September 1854, the Crimean War victory over the Russians that also gave nearby Alma Road its name. CAMRA reads the lettering on the parapet as commemorating the battle and the pub as built shortly afterwards; one pub-history source gives 1866 for the opening. - On record: The interior is the pub's real treasure: CAMRA rates it two stars, 'very special national historic interest', for its back-painted mirrors of herons, flowers and foliage, three mosaic roundels bearing the pub's name and a frieze in the old billiard room. CAMRA also notes the interior has been altered by successive refurbishments. Source: CAMRA Pub Heritage assessment, last surveyed 13 March 2017
