A bit of history
Formerly the Duke of York, the pub was renamed the Clerk & Well in 2010, after the Clerk's Well that gave Clerkenwell its name. It describes itself as one of the oldest pubs in central London. Directories list a Duke of York here from 1829, and the present building went up in the 1880s a few metres north of the old one when Clerkenwell Road was cut through.

Stories & legends
- On record: The Clerks' Well that gave Clerkenwell its name is a real, surviving structure on Farringdon Lane. It is recorded since the 12th century, was found again in 1924 and can still be glimpsed through a window of Well Court, with visits by appointment through Islington Local History Centre. - Local legend: The story goes that the London parish clerks staged annual miracle plays at the well in the Middle Ages, and that the district is named for them. The name's origin in the well is well supported, but the plays are told as tradition and the sources we read give no firm record.
