A bit of history
Trading as a licensed ale house on this site since 1759 and rebuilt in 1875, a date shown on the frontage. The pub says Dickens drank here in the 1830s; the Three Cripples of Oliver Twist was a lodging house next door.

Stories & legends
- On record: Saffron Hill was a notorious Victorian slum, and Dickens put Fagin's den near here in Oliver Twist (1837-39). The One Tun was rebuilt in 1875 over its original cellars, so the Victorian crime-and-squalor setting is real history, even though the building Dickens knew is gone. Source: Rupert Willoughby, 'A Dickensian Landmark in London: The Site of Fagin's Lair on Saffron Hill' (2019); CAMRA
- Local legend: The pub is said to have been Dickens's local between about 1833 and 1838, and to be the model for the low Saffron Hill pub Bill Sikes drinks in. Sources hedge it with 'apparently' and 'claimed, not unreasonably', and we found no contemporary record; it is a story, not a fact. Source: Exploring London; Rupert Willoughby (2019); the pub's own guest information
- Disputed: The Three Cripples of the novel is often tied to this spot. Exploring London says the real Three Cripples was a lodging house next door that sold no ale, which sits oddly with other accounts that call it a pub. Source: Exploring London, posts on the One Tun and Saffron Hill
