A bit of history
A Grade II listed Smithfield pub dated 1898 on its gable, designed by Latham Augustus Withall, with Art Nouveau-influenced tilework attributed to William Neatby of Doulton. Much of the interior dates from a reopening in 2007, though CAMRA describes the bar-back as looking original and the small Fox's Den room as partly a 1993 refit.

Stories & legends
- On record: Insurance records name a victualler here in 1788, when the street was still Charterhouse Lane. The pub was rebuilt in 1898 for the victuallers Roberts Brothers, who knocked it through to their cigar shop next door at No. 117 to make a big first-floor dining room. - Local legend: The Fox & Anchor is often described as one of the few Smithfield pubs that opened early, with a full licence, for the market porters coming off their night shift, which is the usual explanation for its famous breakfasts. The tale is widely repeated; we didn't find a licensing record for it, and the pub now opens at 7am on weekdays.
