A bit of history
Grade II* listed and on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors; the present building dates from 1896 (architect J W Brooker), a pub of this name has stood here since 1760, and it reopened in 2017 after almost four years closed following flood damage.

Stories & legends
- On record: Before it was a famous gig venue, the Half Moon hosted three U2 gigs in 1980. The first, in June, is described as drawing about a dozen people, and the return date in July is said to have been the first UK venue the band sold out. Van Morrison and the Police are also listed among acts who played here early on. Source: Wikipedia, 'Half Moon, Herne Hill', citing contemporary gig records and accounts
- Local legend: The pub says Dylan Thomas, staying with a friend on nearby Milkwood Road, drank here and that it inspired 'Under Milk Wood'. Wikipedia traces the Herne Hill link to a 1959 Welsh magazine piece and a friend's recollection, and we found no contemporary record of the pub itself being the inspiration. - Local legend: Locals still talk of Frank Sinatra dropping in to visit his old chauffeur and giving an impromptu performance. The pub's own page lists Sinatra and David Bowie among its stars, but gives no dates, and the only supporting evidence we found is a press photo of Mia Farrow meeting the chauffeur.
