A bit of history
The building began as the Tress & Co hat factory in the mid-19th century, making bowler, topper and boater hats; it is one of the few original buildings left on this stretch of Stamford Street. Hat-making was a Southwark and Bankside trade, with seven hat-makers recorded in Stamford Street in 1882.

Stories & legends
- Disputed: The pub's own history page says the hotel's name comes from its past as a hat factory, and tells the story that mercury used in hat-making sent hatters 'slightly mad'. Mercury poisoning among hatters (felt-making used mercury compounds) is well documented. What is less certain is whether 'mad as a hatter' really comes from it: the phrase seems to be recorded before Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter, and popular accounts disagree about how much Carroll drew on the illness.
