A bit of history
A pub on this spot is recorded by 1851, when it stood at 162 Waterloo Road (the road was later renumbered), trading as the Wellington Tavern and later the Wellington Arms. It was rebuilt and enlarged around 1918, absorbing the neighbouring Lord Hill, a pub built in 1891; Fuller's refurbished it and its bedrooms in 2025.

Stories & legends
- On record: The bar's arched ceiling carries a large mural of the Battle of Waterloo, a fitting sight for a pub across the road from Waterloo station. CAMRA's listing calls it the pub's most striking feature, and the landlord says it was repaired in the 2025 refurbishment. We have not found a source for who painted it or when, and nothing explaining why the pub took the Wellington name beyond the obvious link to the Duke.
