A bit of history
Trading since about 1746 as the White Hart, rebuilt in 1897 and later a Spanish restaurant before being refurbished in 2010 as the Tommyfield. The new name comes from Tommyfield Market in Oldham, Greater Manchester, not from anywhere in Kennington.

Stories & legends
- Disputed: The pub's own site says it is named after the 19th-century market that was home to Britain's first fish and chip shop. That market is Tommyfield in Oldham, where a blue plaque marks the claim for John Lees, c. 1863. London has a rival: the conventional account puts the origin with the Malin family in Bow, and one historian is quoted as saying nobody really knows who was first. - On record: The earliest mention found of the site's older pub, the White Hart, is a grim newspaper report from 1764. A landlord's actions are said to have startled a lady's horse, which fell on Mr Blake of the White Hart, who died of his injuries.
