A bit of history
Housed in a converted early 20th-century office building on the former Tothill Fields, it is a Fuller's Ale & Pie house with a hotel attached rather than an old coaching inn. The hotel's own history page says the building has been home to the London Municipal Society, a railway gazette and a book publisher.

Stories & legends
- Local legend: The hotel's own history page repeats local stories of secret tunnels or passages running from the basement towards the Westminster buildings nearby. It presents them as stories, and we have found nothing to show any tunnel exists. Source: Sanctuary House Hotel's own history page (sanctuaryhousehotel.co.uk/history)
- On record: The name comes from the old sanctuary of Westminster Abbey, where people fleeing the law could claim protection; CAMRA's listing says Tothill Fields lay within its limits. The privilege was later cut back and finally abolished under James I. Source: CAMRA WhatPub listing (camra.org.uk/pubs/128666); 1927 London guide on Broad Sanctuary (gardenvisit.com)
- Disputed: CAMRA's listing and contemporary news coverage report that Jeremy Corbyn, newly elected Labour leader in September 2015, led a crowd in singing The Red Flag in this pub. One later trade article places the celebration in a different Westminster pub, the Red Lion, so the venue is not completely certain.
