A bit of history
CAMRA describes a traditional pub dating back to the mid-17th century, first leased by Young's in 1832, opened out in the 1980s, enlarged in 2002 to add hotel accommodation and refurbished in 2013.

Stories & legends
- Local legend: The poet Algernon Charles Swinburne, who lived at The Pines on Putney Hill with his friend Theodore Watts-Dunton from 1879 until his death in 1909, is said to have walked across the Common most days to drink here. CAMRA says the pub was 'famously' his, and a scholar's essay adds that he took one bottle of Bass and that the pub keeps his chair, but that essay gives no citation for either detail. We have not seen a firsthand source. Source: CAMRA WhatPub listing; Terry L. - Disputed: The pub's age is given differently by different sources. CAMRA says it dates from the mid-17th century, while the Plaques of London directory calls it a former coaching inn built in the early 17th century. Neither gives a primary record, so treat it as an old site rather than a precisely dated building. Source: CAMRA WhatPub listing; plaquesoflondon.co.uk
