A bit of history
CAMRA says the Dog & Fox was mentioned in 1617 as the last coaching stop into London, that it has been a Young's pub since 1834 and that it was rebuilt in 1869. The pub's own website says it was commissioned by Earl Spencer in the late 1700s, which it calls 'historic rumours'.

Stories & legends
- On record: CAMRA says the inn on this spot was mentioned in 1617 as the last coaching stop into London, which would make it one of the oldest pub sites in the Village. We have repeated CAMRA's wording rather than seen the 1617 record ourselves, and the present building is Victorian (rebuilt 1869). Source: CAMRA WhatPub listing (camra.org.uk/pubs/140216)
- On record: In the Napoleonic wars the pub was a centre for training volunteer soldiers: CAMRA says it hosted meetings of the Volunteers in 1797, raised against the threat of French invasion. Merton Heritage Service confirms Wimbledon raised an infantry regiment and a cavalry squadron that year. - Local legend: The pub's own website says the building was commissioned by Earl Spencer, Lord of the Manor, in the late 1700s, but it hedges this itself as 'historic rumours'. We found no record to back it up. Source: dogandfoxwimbledon.co.uk (the pub's own site)
