A bit of history
CAMRA dates the pub to 1665, a sprawling landmark on the Common that was much extended in the 19th century. Historic England lists it at Grade II (1974), describing an early 19th-century stock brick front whose steep roof may suggest an earlier date; a Lambeth picture library note says it was first recorded in 1729 with the present building from about 1797.

Stories & legends
- Disputed: The pub is usually dated to 1665, and one local pub-history site says parish records of that year name a miller, Thomas Crenshaw, who also kept an alehouse. A Lambeth picture-library note instead says the pub was first recorded in 1729 and the present building dates from about 1797. We could not trace the parish record itself, so the 1665 date is best read as the pub's tradition. Source: CAMRA WhatPub listing; Shady Old Lady's Guide to London; Lambeth borough photos archive
- Disputed: A pub-listing site says the founder of the Boy Scouts drew up his first guide to scouting in an upstairs room here, without naming him. Baden-Powell's writing of Scouting for Boys is more firmly tied to the Mill House at Wimbledon Windmill, and we found no second source for the Clapham story.
