A bit of history
Opened in 1881 as the Connaught Tavern to serve passengers at Victoria Dock; as passenger traffic fell it served mainly dockers waiting to be picked for work. A Grade II listed late-Victorian building of red brick with a Dutch gable, designed by Vigers and Wagstaffe 'somewhat in the manner of Norman Shaw', it reopened as the Fox Connaught in 2003 after 17 years closed.

Stories & legends
- Local legend: A haunted-pubs book of 1972 tells of a second-floor room where a former landlord's aunt was said to have died. The story goes that the pub's two Alsatian dogs would not enter the room, and a barman who went up there saw an elderly woman with a savage look at the top of the stairs before the staff fled downstairs. Readers later wrote of a snarling old woman in the attic, whom regulars called 'Old Mary'. These are one-person recollections and the retelling of them, and nobody has tested them.
